Sparkling Lakes and Picture-Perfect Villages
This trip will take you through Friesland, one of Holland's most rural areas. Peaceful countryside is a hallmark of this tour, which follows a route through peaceful villages and towns, many of which have a vibrant past. The route takes you through forests, fields, marshes, dunes, and pastures, where you'll see plenty of Frisian horses and cattle. Tourists come from all over the world to take in the beautiful Wadden Islands, which are located in the province of Friesland. You may wish to extend your trip for one extra night so that you can stay in Harlingen and see Terschelling or Wadden Islands Vlieland. Just like all of our bike tours, you'll find your luggage waiting for you when you arrive at the outstanding accommodations we've provided for you.

Itinerary

Day One: Heerenveen
You can reach Heerenveen by taking a train from the airport in Amsterdam. Heerenveen is an attractive town that was founded in 1551 at a site where there are two canals that cross. It's the country's oldest village made up of peat canals. Some nearby points of interest include Museumpark Landgoed Oranjewoud, a peaceful park that's home to Belvedere Museum, which contains contemporary and 20th century Frisian art.

Sample hotel: Hotel Heidehof

Day Two: Heerenveen to Oudemirdum (47 km)
As you ride out of Heerenveen, you'll view a manmade landscape made up of peat bog, which was dug up and used as fuel hundreds of years ago. The area has been partially drained over the years and today is used as cattle pastures. As you cycle this part of the route, you'll first come to Lemmer, a Lake IJsselmeer port where many pleasure craft are moored at various times of the year. One point of interest near the town of Lemmer that you might want to check out is the Wouda pumping station, which runs entirely on steam. It began operating in 1920. Today it's included on the list of World Heritage Sites. After leaving Lemmer, you'll ride through the hilly forests of Gaasterland on your way to Oudemirdum, where you'll spend the night.

Sample hotel: Hotel Boschlust

Day Three: Oudemirdum to Harlingen (60 km)
The next stop on your trek is Stavoren, which is Friesland's oldest village. Then you'll follow Lake IJsselmeer's coastline, drinking in its beauty along the way. You'll ride through Hindeloopen, which is known around the world for its remarkable furniture, Makkum, which is famous for the pottery that is crafted there, and Workum. At the end of the day you'll ride into Harlingen, a trading port.

Sample hotel: Hotel ‘t Heerenlogement

Day Four: Harlingen to Leeuwarden (65 km)
On the fourth day of your trip, you'll follow the Frisian coastline along Wadden Sea, which is quite shallow and contains mud flats that  have hearty plants that can stand up to the tide of saltwater that rolls in two times per day. The sea has always shaped the landscape here.  However, manmade terps and dikes now hold the sea back. When the afternoon arrives, you'll be tracing the path of Dokkumer Ee River until you reach the city of Leeuwarden, which is Friesland Province's capital.

Sample hotel: Fletcher-Hotel-Paleis Stadhouderlijk Hof

Day Five: Leeuwarden to Heerenveen (61 km)
Today you'll turn south and ride into It Lege Midden, or "the empty center". This part of your journey is filled with vast, empty landscapes that are overflowing with beauty. The lowland area is filled with peat, and lakes dot the landscape in places where people dug the peat up hundreds of years ago when it was used as fuel. The main event on this part of the trip is Grouw, a village that's known for water sports. When you stop in there, it's not a bad idea to take a break at a caf? that sits right on the water and enjoy some of the many sweets this region is known for.

Day Six: Return Home (non-cycling day)
After a healthy breakfast, you'll head home.
