Forests, Polders, and Rivers
This route takes you through a wide variety of beautiful areas. The Posbank lies in Veluwezoom National Park and is filled with sand drifts, pines, and heath areas. After climbing all the way up, you'll enjoy stunning panoramas. This tour also takes you to a nature preserve that sits on a riverbank and through several charming villages that were once part of the European trading alliance Hansa League, which operated from the 1200s to the 1600s. After each day of riding, you'll put your feet up at a comfortable hotel, and just like all of our bike tours, you'll find your luggage waiting for you when you arrive.
Day One: Ede
There's free parking at the hotel in Ede, which is easily reached via train from the airport in Amsterdam.
Sample hotel: Hotel De Reehorst
Day Two: Ede to Strand Nulde (53 km)
As you head out of Ede, you'll ride through forests and heath areas until you reach Otterlow, which holds the gateway to De Hoge Veluwe National Park. You can visit the park, or you can just continue on to the recreational area at Strand Nulde, which offers beaches and plenty of water activities on the coast of Veluwe Lake.
Sample hotel: Postillion hotel Amersfoort
Day Three: Strand Nulde to Zwolle (76 km)
As you follow the Randmeren lakeshores, you'll head into Harderwijk. You'll get glimpses of the town's past as a trading and fishing village on the Zuiderzee, although today it sits right next to the Flevopolder, which is the world's biggest manmade island. You'll cycle over Knardijk Dike to cross onto the Flevopolder before following Lake Veluwe's shoreline until you reach Elberg, a charming medieval village. Finally you'll end up in Zwolle, a bustling market town, which sits amidst four rivers, serving as a major junction for traffic moving through the area. Inside the town you'll see what's left of the city wall, which was built during medieval times, and a variety of monuments which date back to the town's Hansa League days.
Sample hotel: Mercure Hotel Zwolle
Day Four: Zwolle to Deventer (44 km)
Today you'll trace the IJssel River's path to Deventer, another former Hansa League town. Deventer sits on the riverbanks and is home to hundreds of historic structures, many of which are located at Brink Square. You might want to stop in at one of the cake shops and try some of the local delicacies. The town is also well-known for its festivals, fairs, and markets.
Sample hotel: Postillion Hotel Deventer
Day Five: Deventer to Arnhem (67 km)
The IJssel River stays with you for the beginning of this stretch of your journey, which will take you to Zutphen and several other small towns along the edges of Veluwezoom National Park. Your path then takes you through forests and heaths and up the Posbank (it's quite a climb!).
Sample hotel: Postillion Hotel Arnhem
Day Six: Arnhem to Ede (29 km)
This part of your trek takes you through Veluwezoom National Park and the southern portion of Veluwe Forest. After passing through Oosterbeek and Renkum, you'll follow the railway until you reach Ede.
